The Rules of the Game

E-mail Print

1) RIKISHIS AND BASHOS

Each player will have a maximum of three fictitious rikishi per basho, and every rikishi will receive a different shikona. This shikona is not allowed to be exactly identical to the real sumo rikishi in Japan.

2) THE RULES

For every fictitious rikishi, the player will select 10 real sekitori from the official banzuke released before the basho in Japan.

Every fictitious rikishi would be able to repeat only 3 sekitori with the rest of the rikishis. Nevertheless, this quota will be increased when any of the Sanyaku ranks only allows you to select one sekitori (due to kyujo in Japan). For instance, when having 2 Ozekis in the banzuke, and one of them will not participate, FOUR repeated rikishis will be allowed between every rikishi.

The 10-sekitori selection must be made according the following criteria:

1 Yokozuna

1 Ozeki

1 Sekiwake

1 Komusubi

2 Maegashiras 1-5 (both ranks included)

2 Maegashiras 6-10 (both ranks included)

2 Maegashiras 11-16 (both ranks included

Entries for every basho will be admitted as of the same day that banzuke is released in Japan until the day when basho begins -Shonichi- (both days included). Any entry made before or after that dates will no be accepted.

The scoring system will be ruled by the following table. Every rikishi will add/substract (if he wins/loses) the appropriate points. For instance: if the Yokozuna wins over the Komusubi, the Yokozuna will get 4 points and the Komusubi will substract 4 points from his scoring.

FINAL RESULTS

The final win-loss record of every ciber-rikishi is given according to his final points. After calculating the points intervals for every result in each division, every ciber-rikishi receives the relevant result according to his scoring and division

First, the points average of every division ("M") is calculated. Those rikishis above "M" (in their división) will gain kachi-koshi, and those who are below "M" will gain make-koshi. Also, the "Ideal Ciber-Rikishi" is calculated (with the best yokozuna, ozeki.... etc) in order to know the highest scoring that rikishis could have achieved ("H").

With "H" and "M", the interval I=H-(M/N) is calculated, where "N" is the number of eventual positive results of the division. (For Juryo and Makuuchi, with 15 bouts per rikishi, N=2. For other divisions, N=4). The new "I" value will be added to "M" in order to create the points intervals for every possible result, and it will be deducted to create the negative ones.

So, it will give the following intervals:

The Cibersumo results will be officially released after the real basho in Japan.

3) BANZUKE

Banzuke will include 42 cyber-rikishi in Maegashira, 28 in Juryo, 120 in Makushita and 200 in Sandanme. As a exception, for the first basho, all the players started as Maegashira 8.

New players will receive the last rank available in the banzuke. On a daily basis the standings with points for every rikishi will be published (with no win-loss estimation at all until the basho ends). There will be only one winner in the final day

Then, Makuuchi, Juryo and Makushita standings will be made, with every rikishi receiving his relevant wins-losses result according to his points. From that final result, the Provisional Banzuke will be made for the following ciberbasho.

Exceptions:

  • Sekiwakes will be considered for promotion to Ozeki with at least 33 wins, with a minimum record of 10-5. Also, any rikishi who wins two straight yushos will gain promotion to Ozeki.
  • Ozekis with makekoshi will be KADOBAN (Ok) for the next tournament. The rules for Ozeki kadoban to retrieve his status will be the same that in real sumo.
  • Ozekis will gain promotion to Yokozuna after getting 36 or more victories in the previous three bashos, with a minimum record of 10-5, after winning the Makuuchi yusho or jun-yusho in any of that three bashos. If the Yokozuna fails to get kachikoshi for three straight bashos he will be forced to retire (INTAI).

In this case, the player will have the chance to create a new fictitious rikishi, who will received the last Makushita rank available for the following basho. Besides, this player will have the privilege that nobody but him will be able to use his former Yokozuna's shikona for a new rikishi (ie: FUJIYAMA II).

4) KYUJO

From January 2004, the KOSHO is abolished. In case of absence, rikishis will be receive the KYUJO status and will lose the relevant ranks for the following banzuke. Only three straight absences are allowed. After the third absence, rikishis will be INTAI and off-banzuke, although the oyakata will be able to register three new rikishis.

5) YUSHO & SANSHO

The OVERALL WINNER will be the rikishi who gets most points in the overall standings. The yusho of every division will be awarded to the rikishi who gets the best scoring of every division. In case of kettei-sen (play-off) in Japan, the points of that bout will also be awarded.

Yusho winner in Japan will add 14 extra points for every rikishi. Likewise sansho winners in Japan will add 10 extra points for every rikishi. These 'bonus' will only affect last day standings and will not be included in the Ginosho rankings.

If draw between several rikishis, fictitious kettei-sen will be made taking into account the following criteria in this order: Most wins for their Yokozuna and/or Ozeki and/or Sekiwake and/or Komusubi, in this order.

  • Number of sansho prizes won by the selected sekitori.
  • Number of kinboshi won by the selected sekitori.
  • Number of kachikoshi achieved by the selected sekitori.
  • Rank in the ciber-banzuke (from higher to lower).
