The start of the 2020 Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament has been pushed up to run from July 5 to 19 to avoid overlapping with the Tokyo Olympics, according to the 2019 and 2020 tournament schedules released by the Japan Sumo Association (JSA) on June 1.

Typically, the JSA releases the schedule for tournaments two years in advance. It is unusual for a schedule to be released three years in advance. Grand sumo tournaments traditionally begin on the second Sunday of January, March, May, July, September, and November, and are held for a period of 15 days.

Under this precedent, the 2020 July Grand Sumo Tournament in Nagoya would normally be held from July 12 to 26. However, the opening ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Games is scheduled for July 24, which would create a three-day overlap between the tournament and the Games.

Considering factors such as crowding on the roads and public transport and a lack of accommodations for guests, the association decided to move up the starting date of the July tournament.
